Textile fibre of the more than one-year-old tropical plant of the Amaryllidaceae family (originating in America), whose pulpy leaves are between 1m and 1.8m long. Among the most important of these is the sisal, its water-resistant leaves a shiny white. Used in the production of rope and cord.
