Appliqué

Decorative supplement to a fabric, achieved by the stitching or sticking on of a separate, often bright or highly obvious cut-out of a fabric, knit or leather from a different base textile. Used to create a great variety of simple and more sophisticated graphic motifs. A. may be supplemented with embroidery. A. was especially popular in clothing of the Renaissance period, and had been used earlier in the clothing of the Copts.
