Beret; barette

soft, flat head covering, typically of circular shape and worn angled to one side; comes in various sizes. Both a ladies' and a men's fashion accessory. Made of knitted, woollen fabric, which is felted. Was popular in the 15th and 16th centuries, when it was made of velvet. In the age of Romanticism it was popular with painters.
