Chain stitch; lockstitch; ladder stitch

we distinguish between manual and mechanical c. s. Manual c. s. is performed when a loop takes up the loop of its succeeding stitch, creating on the outer side a chain-like shape; this is used in embroidery. Mechanical c. s. is performed when a loop takes up the loop of its succeeding stitch or the loop of another thread; this s. has the appearance of a knit.
