collective term for garments, for the most part men's, which in line with strict conventions are adapted for wear on official occasions. The day-wear suit contrasts with town-wear in that it is limited to the classic combination of jacket and trousers with an elegant pattern in the fabric and a conservative shape. On gala occasions classic and formal dress are worn.
