Gabardine (4)

collective term for fine and thick fabrics distinctive for their pronounced oblique ribbing. The name is taken from the French "Gabartin" - the fashion salon which first produced such a type. The term might also be derived from the English "gabardine" - a long, loose coat, which in earlier times was worn by priests and Jews.
