Gloves

clothing accessory, serving for the covering and protection of the hand in cold weather, as protection against dirt, and as a fashion accessory. Depending on the intended use we distinguish between work g., dress g., sports g. and ceremonial g. G. come in pairs, and are produced from a great variey of materials: woven fabrics, knits, leather, fur, tulle and lace. The choice of material is determined by the purpose of use. G. may have fingers, a thumb only, or be fingerless. G. were discovered in the Pyramids in Egypt. In the Middle Ages, g. often had a symbolic meaning; g. adorned with gemstones were among the most luxurious accessories worn by the privileged classes.
