Overlock stitch

hand- and machine o. s. serves to ensure the presence of free, open edges in a textile fabric before shakeout, and also to connect the edges of several textile fabrics, thus insuring them against fraying. O. s. is created by groups of threads, of which at least one goes around the edge of a sewn textile fabric; its loop is provided either by the previous loop of the same thread (one-thread o. s.), or that of other threads (two- or multi-thread o. s.)
