Ratteening

used with woollen fabrics and obtained by fulling (achieved by mechanical friction in a soap solution), combing in various directions, shearing and refining, which in this case means subjecting the fabric to friction under pressure between two plates, creating thereby on the fabric surface smaller or larger felted fibre tufts and clusters of hair which cover the weave. Fabric is soft and bulky to the touch.
