lustrous fabric which is somewhat coarse to the touch and has longitudinal, transverse or angled ribbing given by its weave and a suitable yarn. Where the ribs have the same width, we refer to plain r.; mixed r. has ribs of differing sizes. There are the following forms of r.: barré, coteline, faconné, mouliné, ondé, ottoman, papillon, piqué and pilot. The name is given by the German "Rippe" (= rib).
