Sleeve

tubular piece of a garment for the covering of part or all of the upper limbs. Its shape and length are often determined by fashion. We distinguish between many types of s.: two-piece, head, one-piece, kimono, wedge-shaped, shirtcuff, leg-of-mutton, flouncing, three-piece. In ancient times clothing was sleeveless; the s. did not become an important decorative component until the Middle Ages, since when it has undergone many changes, not least in ladies' clothing.
