Stocking; hose (2)

knitted clothing accessory which is worn on the lower limbs over the knee, as a rule to mid-thigh. Is hose-shaped, and ends in a shaped foot. It is knitted from yarns of wool, cotton or polyamide silk. We distinguish between seamed and seamless s. S. were originally sewn from linen or fine leather. Only from the 13th century on were they hand-knitted; at the end of the 16th century s. began to be produced on the first knitting machines.
