Trail

extended back piece of a dress or skirt, which trails in various lengths along the ground; this enlarges the figure, and invests the wearer with dignity and nobility. Serves as a fashion adornment of wedding, evening and other dresses for wear on special occasions. May be an inseparable or detachable part of a dress. In former times its wear was limited to the royal court. In the Middle Ages it was a separate garment attached to the shoulders, and was also worn by men.
