Velvet (3)

soft, midweight fabric with a short, thick pile formed by the cutting of the weft threads. Its basic weave is linen or twill; the pile is created in a satin weave with a large degree of floating. After cutting the pile is combed, trimmed and smoothed. V. is one of the artificial velvets. Used for ladies' coats and dresses for special occasions.
