Velvet (3)

soft, midweight fabric with a short, thick pile formed by the cutting of the weft threads. Its basic weave is [[100954|linen]] or [[100497|twill]]; the pile is created in a [[100049|satin weave]] with a large degree of [[100295|floating]]. After cutting the pile is combed, trimmed and smoothed. V. is one of the artificial velvets. Used for ladies' coats and dresses for special occasions.
