part of workwear, the purpose of which is to protect other garments against soiling and damage. Is long and unlined, and has long sleeves. Produced from washable fabrics or knits. For certain professions has a special colour or cut: a laboratory c. is fastened at the back and is white; mechanical engineers wear dark-blue c.
