term of wider application for a men's and women's top [[101114|sleeved garment]]. Fastened at the front, or else is open. Covers the trunk and also part of the lower limbs. Is close-fitting yet loose, and it most commonly has a lining. Coats are of a variety of lengths, tending to be adapted to fashion. There is a basic difference between fastenings on the ladies' garment and those on the men's: the former are always on the right-hand side.
