ladies' outer [[101114|sleeved garment]], which covers the trunk and the upper parts of the lower limbs. The d. forms the basis of a ladies' wardrobe. It may be of one or more pieces and is typically composed of a skirt and sleeved bodice with a collar; it may also be sleeveless and collarless. A d. is usually unlined, and it comes in a variety of shapes which are determined by trends in fashion.
